Are you learning to drive or looking for driving lessons? If so, you’ve probably heard about new changes to the driving test booking system. Any legislation changes can be confusing. So, let’s have a look at what these changes might mean for you.
Understanding the Changes to Driving Test Booking
What’s happening with driving test booking?
For the last few years, there have been increasingly long wait times for learner drivers looking to sit their driving test. To combat this problem and improve accessibility for all, the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has implemented changes to the test booking system. These changes came into play on April 8, 2025.
What are the main changes?
There are three key changes to the booking system that may impact your driving test booking:
Extended cancellation notice period – Up until April 8th, learner drivers were able to cancel or reschedule a car driving test without forfeiting the test fee up to three days before their test date. Now, you will be required to provide at least 10 full working days’ notice to cancel or reschedule. After that point, you will lose your money. This should reduce last-minute cancellations. And allow more test slots to be filled.
Increased rebooking time after failing – If you fail your driving test, you will now have to wait 28 working days before you can rebook. This has been increased from 10 days. It’s a sensible precaution intended to ensure that learners are adequately prepared before retaking the test.
Third party booking restrictions – Only learner drivers and approved driving instructors can book tests for learners they are actively teaching. This is to combat the rise in third-party websites that have been exploiting learners by offering to book tests at an inflated fee.
What else do you need to know?
As well as implementing changing for learners, the DVSA has introduced a revamped booking system to increase the availability of test slots. Making it easier for learners to find a testing time while reducing waits. And to support this, they have also recruited 450 new driving examiners across the UK.
Changes to driving test regulations are often viewed with concern. But with driving test wait time currently around four to six months across the UK, these new procedures should actually be of benefit for all learner drivers. It will hopefully mean that you don’t need to book so far in advance. Which means that you are more likely to be completely ready for your test when it arrives. However, it’s always wise to ask your instructor their opinion on your readiness before you book your driving test!
